Our planet is under pressure, yet optimism persists. A novel accolade from the interdisciplinary festival the Starmus festival aims to motivate people to act.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name is to be awarded in memory of the celebrated scientist and conservationist who passed away this year. It is designed to celebrate individuals and groups that champion our planet's biodiversity.

The Medal's Framework

Initial honorees will be revealed during the Starmus VIII festival in Tenerife and La Palma, which will run from October 17th to 22nd the coming year.

According to statements that Jane Goodall, who was a Starmus advisory board member, had endorsed the medal's establishment. “The idea behind this award, and Starmus being entrusted to oversee it, was Jane's wish,” a representative said. “She expressed she would like this to happen. And I think because of the unique relationship she had with us.”

“This medal will acknowledge ongoing initiatives undertaken to create a planet a better place for people, animals and the environment and foster motivation to continue such efforts,” said a family member.

Structure and Vision

One of the founders of Starmus indicated that the medal – unveiled at a prestigious venue – will likely encompass various fields.

“It’s going to be inspired by the Stephen Hawking award for science communication established exactly 10 years ago,” he explained. Jane Goodall was an honoree of that award.

Expressing concern about the future of the planet, one figure said, “Frankly, it’s very hard to maintain optimism. Certain policies globally is conducting a dismissal of evidence. So this really cripples global initiatives.”

“Realistically, the prospects aren't very good so we have to begin to reflecting, with greater urgency about the consequences of human activity. And that’s not only climate change, that’s the whole way in which we interact with nature.”

Inspiring Change

Consequently, observers believe this is an opportune moment to honor her guiding principles. “It is believed that in bestowing this medal, we will be considering this essential spirit of Jane’s – which made her foremost concern, to change the way we treat the other animals around us.”

A pressing concern today involves the spread of misinformation. The focus of the upcoming festival is set as “the search for truth”.

“There is a recognition that truth is becoming a matter of debate when politics is involved. And it’s a very dangerous thing,” he commented. “Climate research remains a scientific discipline; it is impossible to allow interference by political agendas in this field.”

Optimism and Resolve

The goal is that this honor will inspire concrete steps. “The purpose is inspiring individuals to get involved and to show concern and to strive in that direction, really. Whether or not we’re optimistic, we have to focus on working the best we can,” a statement concluded. “Be prepared for setbacks, but you still continue striving towards succeeding.”

A family member engaged in conservation work expressed hope that “given direction and when empowered, humanity can be responsible caretakers of Earth”, citing the programs of an institute which, among its other activities, empowers young people get involved locally, wildlife, and environment.

“As Jane Goodall constantly told everyone, the choices we make each day make a difference and it is up to us what type of impact we choose to create,” he said. “It is not too late and this medal will provide inspiration and increase understanding about the positive actions that are being undertaken.”
