"Any idea when you're interviewing Haim?" a message arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

However, there remains a single issue: I also longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. A host of high-profile admirers have openly coveted the position.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit gang. Their music videos repeatedly feature them walking in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such unfettered exuberance you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire others to make music."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the next part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The band are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major milestone," says Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project came out of a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The lyrics detail departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That newfound resilience required a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The trio's candor shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating tales.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

However Haim will always be their top priority.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still kicking."
