In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
