Meteorologists are reporting an icy beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely over large parts of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Celebrations Continue In Spite of Warnings
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay festivities are set to take place, unlike last year's postponement. This proceeds amid advisories for snow in northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," said the national forecaster.
Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies
Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be cold, making extra layers essential, as per forecasters.
Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Broad Snow Warnings for Friday
Heading into Friday, weather warnings have been issued for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.
- Travel is likely to be disrupted.
- Travelers are advised to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on public transport.
The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Even More
Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are expected to drop further as snowfall and high winds are likely to hit the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Advisories Released
Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials said this signified the weather was likely to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is absolutely paramount.
